Alison Russell, artist, artist working

I live and work in Melbourne as a visual artist and have a Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in Printmaking.

An enduring fascination with nature’s patterns and textures dominates my imagery; abstract, imaginary landscapes merge internal and external worlds. Ambiguous themes suggest subterranean and underwater worlds, forests and biomorphic forms to evoke curiosity and wonder.

Interestingly, my current work practice is far removed from my printmaking background. Having abandoned the planned and rigid methods often required in printmaking, I’ve pushed a love of drawing and creating subconsciously. This newfound passion has led to two solo exhibitions, group shows and shortlisted as an art prize finalist.

When starting new works I don’t use references or sourced images. Echoing automatism techniques as starting points to stimulate imagery from the subconscious, the works emerge from chance and go through an intuitive journey of addition, subtraction, and rotation without a premeditated route. The alchemy of combining ink, water and salt enables transformation of found shapes and structures. Continuous line drawing and doodling can encourage meandering thoughts from which to build.

Rotating the paper while working is an integral part of the work process as it forces the eye to see in another way. Many of my works are diptychs and triptychs, allowing numerous configurations in which a work can be viewed (both vertically and horizontally) before a final orientation is realised.
